Lagoon Trail
Started 2019
Completed Dec 2020
Opened March 2021
Our first trail, which became our flagship, is located on Sawdon Station adjoining Lake Tekapo Regional Park. This 8.2km loop trail is one of the few in NZ where the public can access an iconic, very scenic, high country station without first requiring permission from the landowner. The trail was formed largely using narrow and rutted sheep tracks which had to be widened, benched in places, hundreds of rocks removed and finally metalled – all with manual labour. The loop encompasses a large lagoon providing stunning reflections of Mt Edward.
Frog Rock Trail – Completed March 2022
The formation of the Lagoon Trail gave way to a shorter and flatter 3.2 km loop branching off the Lagoon Trail and visiting the prominent erratic rock left behind by the glacier. Aimed for families, we called the rock Frog Rock and Tekapo Lions donated a table. Being mostly flat, this was easily back-bladed and covered with metal.
Distances of both the above trails are calculated from the south east corner of the Regional Park. To access, use the easy Regional Park Throne Trail which will add another 2 km.
